Why There’s No One-Size-Fits-All Answer
Everyone Wants a Number
One of the questions we hear most often is, “How often should I have my air ducts cleaned?” Most homeowners expect a simple answer—every three years, every five years, or maybe every year. The honest answer is a little more helpful than that: it depends on your home.
Your HVAC system tells a story about the people who live there, and no two homes have exactly the same story. Understanding what affects your home is far more valuable than following a date on a calendar.
What NADCA Actually Recommends
As Wyoming’s only NADCA member company, we follow the industry’s recognized standards. NADCA generally recommends inspecting HVAC systems regularly and cleaning them every three to five years when conditions warrant. That last phrase is important. The recommendation is based on the condition of the system—not simply the passage of time. So what kinds of conditions make one home different from another?
Your Home Has Its Own Story
A retired couple with no pets may go many years before their system needs attention. A busy household with children, multiple pets, frequent visitors, and a recent remodeling project may have very different needs. On the High Plains, our windy climate, seasonal dust, wildfire smoke, nearby construction, housekeeping habits, filter maintenance, and even the number of people living in the home all influence what moves through an HVAC system. Every home is different because every family is different.
Why It Matters:
Trying to follow someone else’s cleaning schedule doesn’t make much sense when your homes—and your lives—are completely different. Understanding what affects your own home leads to more confident decisions.
Don’t Fall for the Myths
Many homeowners have heard that air ducts should be cleaned every year. Others have been told they never need cleaning at all. Neither statement is true for every home. It’s also common to assume that if you can’t see dust at a vent, the system must be clean. In reality, much of the ductwork is hidden from view, and a light layer of dust can be a problem.
Perhaps the biggest misconception is that duct cleaning solves every indoor air quality issue. Indoor air quality depends on many factors—including filtration, ventilation, humidity, housekeeping habits, and outdoor conditions. Air duct cleaning is one piece of the puzzle, not the entire solution.
When Is It Time to Take a Closer Look?
You don’t have to wait until there’s an obvious problem to learn more about your HVAC system. An inspection may be worthwhile after a remodeling project, when purchasing an older home, following a season of heavy wildfire smoke, or simply because you don’t know the history of the system. Sometimes an inspection confirms that everything looks great. Sometimes it uncovers conditions that make cleaning worthwhile. Either way, you’ve gained a better understanding of your home—and that’s always a good outcome.
If there’s one thing we’d like you to remember, it’s this: there isn’t a magic number. There isn’t a perfect schedule. The goal isn’t to clean your air ducts on a calendar. The goal is to understand your home well enough to know when attention is actually needed. Healthy homes aren’t built by following someone else’s checklist. They’re built by paying attention, asking good questions, and making informed decisions over time.
Whether you ever hire Mighty Ducts or not, we hope this guide helps you feel more confident caring for the air inside your home.
